St. Louis JACL Supports Vigil for Atlanta Victims
On Saturday, March 20, 2021 the St. Louis JACL joined the St. Louis Asian Community in gathering for a vigil for the victims of the Atlanta shootings and anti-Asian hate at the Chinese Education & Culture Center in Richmond Heights, Missouri.
St. Louis Leaders Address the Increases in Anti-Asian American Pacific Islander Violence
On March 19, 2021 Asian American leaders in St. Louis addressed the rise of anti-Asian American Pacific Islander hate and violence incidents in the United States during a press conference at St. Louis City Hall. A link to the St. Louis Post-Dispatch news story is below.

National Reporting of Increases in Anti-Asian Violence Incidents
The White House, Asian American organizations, and national media have spotlighted the rise in Anti-Asian violence incidents since the start of the Pandemic in 2020. Although the number of reported incidents in the St. Louis Metropolitan area and state of Missouri are fewer than U.S. east and west coast regions, there should be increased vigilance to locally address potential sources of Anti-Asian incidents immediately when they arise.

OrigamiintheGarden Opens April 17
The Missouri Botanical Garden in St. Louis is opening an Origami (Japanese art form of folding paper) inspired sculpture exhibit on April 17, 2021 that was delayed from 2020 due to Covid-19. The exhibit is scheduled to run through October 10, 2021.

St. Louis JACL Mourns Loss of Ronald Katsuyama
The St. Louis JACL is saddened by the passing of Ronald Katsuyama of the Dayton JACL Chapter on March 2, 2021. Ron was well-known to the St. Louis JACL because of his long-standing participation in the Midwest District Council of the JACL and president of the Dayton Chapter. Ron was a retired professor at the University of Dayton and an avid marathon runner. Ron served as JACL Midwest District Council Governor and held several National JACL Board Offices including Vice President of Public Affairs. Some may know of Ron’s daughter, Jana, who is a TV news anchor in San Francisco and has emceed many National JACL Convention events.
2021 JACL National Scholarship Program
Freshman applications are now closed. Applications for the general (non-freshman) scholarship are now open until April 1, 2021. Information is available on the JACL website http://www.jacl.org and can be accessed by clicking on the “Youth” tab.
Korean-American Film “Minari” Discussion Event
On February 21, 2021 members of the St. Louis JACL held an impromptu Zoom meeting to discuss the film drama “Minari” that was earlier available for streaming. “Minari” is the immigrant story of a Korean-American family that moves to an Arkansas farm. The film was presented by A24 through Cinema St. Louis. “Minari” is written and directed by Lee Isaac Chung. Steven Yeun is among the talented group of actors that perform wonderfully throughout this film, which won the 2021 Golden Globe for Best Foreign Language Film.
