“Beautiful Country: A Memoir” by Qian Julie Wang has been selected for the St. Louis JACL Book Club discussion at a TBA date in 2022. This non-fiction book recalls the undocumented life of a 7-year-old Chinese girl in New York City.

The St. Louis JACL conducted a successful fundraiser at the Soda Tent at the 2021 Japanese Festival at the Missouri Botanical Garden on September 4-6. The St. Louis Chapter thanks all of the many chapter members and volunteers and Missouri Botanical Garden staff that worked many hours to put together such a successful Festival despite the pandemic restrictions.

The JACL is now accepting applications for the 2021 JACL/OCA Leadership Summit in Washington D.C. on September 11-14, 2021. This is an insiders opportunity for JACLers to learn how our U.S. Congress functions as attendees may participate in exercises that will allow to the attendee to lobby a Capitol Hill leader on an important JACL issue. The Midwest District Council, of which St. Louis Chapter is a member, along with JACL National, will pay for most of the expenses, if you are selected. The deadline for online application is August 15, 2021.

The National JACL has announced the start of fundraising for the JACL Centennial Education Fund to help fulfill its mission by providing critically important education programs, tools, and resources towards the next 100 years of civil rights. St. Louis JACL Board Member Robin Hattori will speak virtually on Zoom on July 22, 2021 at 6:30 pm Central Daylight Time as part of the Missouri History Museum series on St. Louis. “How the Hattoris Became St. Louisans: One Family’s Incarceration during WWII” will detail the story of a Japanese American family that endured a forced removal from California to an incarceration camp in Arkansas. Former St. Louis JACL Board of Directors member, Joe Yokota, passed away July 10, 2021 at age 94. Mr. Yokota was a longtime McDonnell Douglas engineer and resident of Hazelwood, Missouri. For many years Joe was the chairperson for the annual Japanese Festival setup and teardown committee at the Missouri Botanical Garden. Visitation and memorial service will be held on July 17, 2021 at St. Timothy’s Episcopal Church, 808 N. Mason Road, beginning at 10:00 am.
