Asian Identity and Belonging: The Adoptee Experience – September 19

You are invited to the first in a series of programs that the St. Louis JACL is hosting in partnership with Webster University from a generous grant from Missouri Humanities. This event will feature three panelists from China, Vietnam and Korea who have been raised in the St. Louis region. The discussion will be led by Michelle Li, co-anchor on KSDK “Today in St. Louis at 5 On Your Side” and co-founder of the Very Asian Foundation.

Date: Thursday, September 19, 2024. 5:30pm is the Community Resource Fair, 6:00pm is the Moderated panel discussion, 7:00pm is the Reception with Asian appetizers and networking. Location is Webster University, 8274 Big Bend Blvd., Browning Hall Auditorium Room 160, free parking in Lot K. RSVP is required by September 15, 2024 at the link below.

Chuseok Korean Harvest Festival 9/14/24

A number of JACL members are volunteering to help out at the Chuseok Festival at Tower Grove Park on Saturday, September 14. Come and join this free event showcasing Korean traditions and a K-Pop dance competition! Korean food and drinks will be available for purchase from some of our local vendors.

2024 Japanese Festival Fundraising Success for JACL!

The St. Louis JACL participation in the 2024 Japanese Festival at the Missouri Botanical Garden from August 31-September 2 was an outstanding success. The JACL Soda Tent raised its second highest gross revenue total ever!

Robin Hattori and Wendy Roll conducted the first St. Louis JACL Cooking Demonstration at the Kemper Kitchen Sunday afternoon. Sunomono and Oyako Domburi were the demonstrated recipes, directly out of the Nisei Kitchen cookbook.

Thank you to all of the volunteers, including these Parkway Central exchange students that worked during one of the busiest shift Saturday afternoon!

JACL July 4th Picnic – July 4th at Vlasis Park

The annual St. Louis JACL July 4th Picnic will be held at Pavilion #1 at Vlasis Park, 300 Park Dr. Ballwin, Missouri 63011, starting at noon. The picnic lunch is pot luck so please bring a dish to share. JACL will be holding its traditional raffle, awarding the JACL scholarship, and conducting a short trivia game. Drinks are provided as long as they last.

If there is rain, there is no alternative site plan. The pavilion has a roof so as long as there is no severe weather, the event will continue.

St. Louis JACL Announces 2024 Scholarship Winner

Jackson (Jack) Steele graduated from Rock Bridge High School in Columbia, Missouri. Jack has volunteered for Special Olympics and is president and founder of the Rock Bridge HS Pancake Club, which donated more than $600 to Lizzy’s Walk of Faith foundation.

Jack achieved Eagle Scout rank in the Boy Scouts of America. As a person of mixed race, Jack looks forward to learning more about diversity, cultural identity, inclusion and overcoming stereotypes.

Jack plans to attend the University of Missouri this fall and study computer science with a focus on cybersecurity.

OCA St. Louis Night Market Gala – June 22, 2024

OCA St. Louis is hosting a Night Market Gala Saturday, June 22 from 7-10 pm at the Forest Park Golf Course, 6141 Lagoon Drive, St. Louis, Missouri 63112. Join OCA and distinguished guest speaker Michelle K. Hanabusa, Founder & Creative Director of LA streetwear brand UPRISERS and co-founder of #HateIsAVirus for a night of celebration of Asian American heritage. St. Louis JACL will have a booth to provide education on JACL and the St. Louis Chapter. Tickets range from $75 – $175 to support OCA St. Louis mission of advocacy, community, and education.

InVISIBLE Showcase – May 17-19, 2024

St. Louis JACL thanks Washington University for their generous grant and all of their partners that made this event such a success. Many JACL members attended the opening on May 17 and then others viewed the gallery on May 18-19. St. Louis JACL members Wendy Roll, Robin Hattori, and Sherry Leitl submitted art and writing that were featured in the exhibit.

Japanese Garden Stone Lantern Tour – April 24

On April 24, 2024 Missouri Botanical Garden Docent Tom Bush led a group of eighteen through the Missouri Botanical Garden’s Japanese Garden to explain the history of the different stone lanterns that have been placed within the Japanese Garden. Mr. Bush provided very interesting details based on years of research.

2024 St. Louis JACL Scholarship Applications Open April 22-May 31

Students are welcome to apply to the local St. Louis JACL Scholarship that is separate from National JACL Scholarships starting April 22 until May 31, 2024. Any current or incoming undergraduates or graduate students at any college, trade school or graduate school may qualify. Preferred consideration will be given to students that participate in current or past events with the St. Louis JACL Chapter. However, the applicant does not need to be a member of the St. Louis JACL Chapter. Applicants must be active in issues of diversity, civil rights, and/or social justice. Applicants cannot apply if they have previously received a scholarship from a JACL Chapter.
